Competency based training also known as National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) helps you to meet the national standards for a number of different occupations. NVQ training is designed for you to learn the practical, work-related skills required to perform various jobs efficiently. There are different levels of NVQ courses and each is designed to increase your abilities, competencies and skills in order to make you more attractive to employers. NVQ training is appropriate for those who wish to improve skills they already have, as well as individuals wishing to develop new skills.

Who Can Take NVQ Training?

NVQ training is available to all young adults and adults who meet two criteria. These criteria include being employed or following a course of study in an approved college, while having a part-time position or access to job placement. You may also take the qualifications at levels NVQ 2 and NVQ 3 under an apprenticeship program. Apprenticeship programs are available in more than 190 different positions across a wide range of careers.

What Types of NVQ Courses Are Available?

NVQ courses consist of a beginner level or NVQ 1, intermediate levels, while NVQ 4 and NVQ 5 are usually considered more advanced or professional qualifications. Courses are available in the following areas:

  • Business administration
  • Marketing and Sales
  • Health Care and Social Assistance
  • Food and Hospitality
  • Property Management and Construction
  • Manufacturing, Production and Engineering

How Are NVQs Assessed?

In order to complete an NVQ course, your work must be assessed by qualified assessor who will observe and question you about the specific duties for which you are training. This assessment will take place at your regular job site or in a very realistic work environment. You will be tested on your knowledge of the position, as well as the actual performance of a particular task. As you complete each task and show a level of proficiency, your assessor will certify the task as complete. Specific jobs require certain types of qualifications and exams, while others may only require a portfolio of work in order to satisfy an assessment. While many particular qualifications are not required, they may strengthen your opportunity when applying for a position or seeking a promotion.

Where NVQ Training Can Lead You

Completed training under the National Vocational Qualification system may lead to a professional designation in a related field. Completing NVQ 3 may allow you to pursue higher education classes in related fields in order to obtain a National Certificate, National Diploma, Foundation Degree or other vocational specialism. Pursuing higher level NVQ training can allow you to complete an ordinary degree or bachelor’s degree in the subject of your choice.

NVQ training can provide the opportunity whereby you prove your ability to work in a certain field. The course of study provides current and potential employers the ability to compare your skills and abilities with those of all other applicants. Understanding the level of training required, and the ability to complete each level will allow you to become a better match for more positions within your chosen field.
